Fugitive slave advertisement for Dolly

Source: Fugitive slave advertisement for Dolly, ca. 1863. Photograph. University of North Carolina Library, Chapel Hill, Manigault Papers, no. 484, vol. 4
Date: ca. 1863
Text/Transcription: This unique wanted notice for Dolly, a self-emancipated enslaved woman, includes a cropped carte-de-visite featuring her face. Her enslaver, Louis Manigault (1828-1899), who described her as “rather good looking,” evidently paid for Dolly’s photograph. After Dolly fled, Manigault used the image in his attempt to secure her return.
