Sojourner Truth (1797-1883) became a prominent speaker supporting abolition and women's rights, drawing connections between the fight for African Americans’ and women's rights. To help these causes, she sat for and sold carte-de-visites such as the one pictured, which included the phrase "I sell the shadow to support the substance."
